Mid-range cash registers serve well as the point of sale solution in many of Britain's small businesses. Many thousands of pubs, restaurants and shops have a fairly standard cash register, simply affording buttons for products, connection for a laser scanner, connection for an external printer and a good standard of accounting functionality.

Depending on where they sit in the price range, they might have memory for a few hundred products up to several thousand products. Most will do networking, allowing multiple machines to communicate and store cumulative sales and stock - which can even be tracked on your PC.

Advantages of a standard cash register:

  • Laser scanner or buttons for products

  • External printers available

  • Better accounting

  • Can store and share sales data
